Chiropractic for everyone...

British Chiropractic Association

At Park View Acupuncture & Chiropractic Clinic we believe that the foundation for lifelong health is laid in childhood. Being born is usually the first trauma we encounter and the next 20 years are the most active and hazardous in our lifetime, starting with learning to walk, run and climb. A young body usually has a very high tolerance level and most symptoms subside quickly. However, as the body often harbours and accumulates residual problems creating a knock-on effect, this tolerance may decrease with every fall and bump. When the tolerance is exhausted you may suddenly experience pain and injury from performing a trivial task. This is when most people first come to see us - but why not attempt to resolve the problems much earlier? We have the ability to detect and correct abnormal function of joints, muscles and nerves before the body puts on the brakes thus allowing you to continue to perform your best. This is why it is never too early and rarely too late to benefit from chiropractic care - whole families do.

All three chiropractors are highly qualified and are trained to deal effectively with both recent and long-standing problems. Dr Simone Cleverley looks after the little ones and she also takes care of the new and expecting mothers. Once people have discovered us most choose to receive regular maintenance treatment to try and stay well rather than relying on 'crisis-care'.

  The Spine

The spinal column is a very complex structure consisting of 24 vertebrae stacked on top of each other connected by 23 discs and 51 joints. 25 pairs of spinal nerves each exit (in most cases) through a narrow canal formed by two adjacent vertebrae. Each nerve supplies an area of the skin with sensation and conveys information to and from muscles and internal organs. Mechanical, degenerative and disc problems can cause local discomfort and may also interfere with the nerve ’s function causing pain, altered sensation, weak muscles in the trunk, arms or legs. Physiological changes may also occur in the internal organs.

  Other Joints

Most joints will, like the spine, respond well to chiropractic treatment. Whether you have sustained an acute injury or you are suffering from chronic pain it is likely that chiropractic can ease your discomfort. Chiropractors Treat a wide range of joint, muscle and nerve related problems:

  • Headaches
  • Neck Pain
  • Shoulder Pain
  • Elbow Pain
  • Tennis Elbow
  • Wrist Pain
  • Carpal Tunnel
  • Syndrome
  • Arthritic Pains

  • Back Pain
  • Disc Problems
  • Trapped Nerves
  • Sciatica
  • Hip Pain
  • Knee Pain
  • Foot &Ankle Pain
  • Pins & Needles
  • Tingling

  The Proof

Most of the research so far has concentrated on low back pain and how to treat this very common condition most effectively. In 1994 the Clinical Standards Advisory Committee recommended that redistribution of NHS funds should give people earlier access to manipulative therapies. In 1996, Royal College of General Practitioners recommended manipulative treatment within the first six weeks for low back pain.

  The Proof

Chiropractic is covered by most medical insurance companies. A GP referral may be necessary. Check your policy for details. Let us know as soon as possible if you are covered so that we can advise on how to claim.

  Your First Visit

After you have completed a detailed health questionnaire your chiropractor will ask questions specific to your presenting complaint. If the health questionnaire raises any questions these will also be addressed. Then follows the physical examination. When this is completed it is time to discuss any further investigations that may be required to reach a diagnosis. It may be necessary to refer you to another practitioner for such tests. Once a diagnosis is confirmed and you are accepted as a chiropractic patient your tailor-made treatment plan is discussed with you. If you are happy to continue you will receive your first treatment at this time.

Ladies will at all times wear treatment gowns.

  Recovery

The speed and degree of recovery depends on several factors. These include the extent and the duration of the injury and your general life-style, and also on your commitment to the treatment plan and your chiropractor ’s advice on rest and exercise.

The 3 Stages of Chiropractic care:

1. Initial intensive care - pain relief and postural stability. Usually 2-4 weeks.

2. Rehabilitative care - complete healing of the condition. Strengthening and re-education of the surrounding muscles. Usually 4-6 weeks,

3. Maintenance care - minimise the risk of recurrences and optimise health. Ongoing - usually once every 2-4 months.
